Why Use the Sandbox?
Why use the sandbox? Meeting ISTE NETS-T Standards and Essential Conditions. Fulfilling requirements of the Common Core. Meeting requirements of the new Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, including technology standards. Not to mention helping to fulfill information and media literacies that students will need to survive in the world beyond Norwell.
ISTE NETS-TISTE NETS-T: The International Society for Technology Education (ISTE) has established two sets of National Educational Technology Standards (NETS)–one for teachers and one for tudents. The NETS-T are for teachers. These standards describe the kinds of
activities and teaching methods that support the teaching of the NETS-S (for students). The basic NETS are: 1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity 2. Design and Develop Digital Age Learning Experiences and Assessments 3. Model Digital Age Work and Learning 4. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility 5. Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership Common Core ImplementationCommon Core: With the implementation of the Common Core and its emphasis on literacy across subject areas and a more balanced approach between literature and informational texts (ELA) as well as shifts in math instruction to focus, coherence, fluency, deep understanding, and math applications, many types of technology-based teaching can enhance and support the attainment of these goals. There are also many cross connections to be made between the AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner and the Common Core (see more below for AASL standards).

Technology Standards: MA Curriculum FrameworksTechnology Standards — Massachusetts: Without
Instruuctional Technology Specialists here at the elementary level, we as teachers need to step up and make sure that students are learning the 21st-century skills they will need to prepare for middle school and beyond. AASL Information Literacy StandardsAASL Information Literacy Standards: Prior to the Common Core, the American Association of School Librarians created the Standards for the 21st Century Learner, which describes the ways in which students should learn about, use, process, and output information in the digital age. Using technology certainly supports these standards as well.
